According to a weather synopsis from Environment Canada meteorologist Jim Steele, the month was so cold that even with the arrival of milder air midway through, daytime highs never climbed above double digits. The warmest day was on March 15 when the high struck 9.6 degrees.

As for the start, the coldest day was on March 1 with an overnight low of -27 Celsius, and it took 12 days before the daytime high crept above freezing.

"March came in like a lion all right, he was wearing a parka," Steele quipped.

As a result, the mean and average temperatures were all at least two degrees below the normal.

The mean temperature of -2.9 was below the normal -0.3, the average daily high of 2.3 was below the normal of 5.0, average daily low of -8.1 was below the normal of -5.5, and the mean temperature of -2.9 was below the normal -0.3.

Total snowfall for the month stood at 11 centimetres, which was 48 per cent of the normal of 22.9 cm while rainfall added up to 2.3 millimetres, 17 per cent of the normal of 13.1 mm.

The greatest one-day snowfall was five cm on March 5 and the greatest rainfall was two mm on March 31.

Total precipitation of the year to date is 121.6 mm, 104 per cent of the normal of 116.8 mm.
