Ruth Lake, north-east of 100 Mile House, is a popular spot for a day trip. There's a lot to discover on this lake, which is set amidst the old-growth Douglas Fir and visible remnants from the last ice-age.

The summer is just heating up, and the trout can still be found in the shallows. However, as the season progresses, the trout will move to the deeper sections of the lake.

Both rainbows and kokanee inhabit Ruth Lake. When going after kokanee, good colours are green or red Wedding Bands with worms, or a Willow Leaf. Red or pink leeches would be good to try as well.

Fly fishers will want to pay attention to any recent hatches when targetting rainbows. Lure fishers can troll with little Gypsy spoons, and Hildebrandts may be productive. Standards are your best choices for Ruth Lake.

Scott Beaton, local angler, says that the best spot for morning fishing is the east arm of the lake. The bay on the northeast end of the lake is a great afternoon location. "Be careful, though", he says, "because the northwest side is swampy and shallow." As well, anglers should be aware of sub-surface logs at the southern portion of the east arm.

Beaton notes that the island along the western side of the lake is called Maternity Island, so-called because that is where the deer go to have their fawns in the spring. There is a very rough dock on the west side of this island.

LAKE ACCESS

Ruth Lake is located north-east of 100 Mile House. Follow Highway 97 north to Canim Lake Road, a few kilometres from town. Turn here, and continue past Forest Grove, watching for park signs to Ruth Lake. The road meets up with the south-western tip of the lake.

There is a day-use provincial park on Ruth Lake, and a single-wide rough boat launch.
