A 54-year-old Vancouver man has been fined $2,000 for the three police batons found in his luggage as he was going through an airport security check in Prince George last year.

Mark Allan McDonald was issued the fine July 11 in Prince George provincial court for two counts of possession of a prohibited weapon. He was also sentenced to a day in jail for breach of an undertaking or recognizance, ordered to pay $200 in victim surcharges and issued a five year firearms prohibition.

Police took McDonald into custody on Oct. 1, 2013 when the items were discovered and he was released the next day on bail.

The incident occurred about three weeks after two novelty marijuana grinders in the shape of hand grenades were confiscated from a passenger at the airport, which had to be evacuated for a time before it was determined they were not real explosives.
