A man has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of a Prince George woman.

Jason Troy Getty, 45, also faces a count of indignity to human remains, B.C. RCMP said Monday, in relation to the death of Crystal Chambers, 34, whose body was found on Aug. 1, 2020 about 40 kilometres east of the city.

Second-degree murder implies the act was committed without planning and carries a minimum sentence of life in prison with no parole for 10 years.

Getty was arrested in Surrey on Friday, RCMP said, adding he was previously a resident of Prince George and was known to Chambers.

The development follows on an investigation by the B.C. RCMP major crime section's criminal investigation unit, with the help from the North District RCMP major crime section and the Prince George RCMP.

"This arrest is a direct result of the dedication and perseverance of numerous investigators and support units within the RCMP over the last 17 months. The investigation remains active and we urge any individuals with information to come forward to the RCMP," said the unit's staff sergeant Greg Yanicki.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Prince George RCMP at 250-561-3300.

Getty remains in custody on a detention order, according to court records.
