A 20-year-old man faces a charge of arson causing damage to property in relation to two fires set Wednesday night along the John Dahl Trail near the Mackenzie Leisure Center.

Crown counsel has approved the charge against Dyllon Gervais, who will remain in custody until at least Monday, when a bail hearing is scheduled at Mackenzie provincial court.

Volunteer fire fighters in the community of 3,500 people 186 kilometres north of Prince George, extinguished the blazes but not before one had grown to over 10 metres.

"These fires put the community and first responders at risk, and it is troubling that in the height of fire season, with wild fires burning across the province, someone would deliberately set a fire," Mackenzie RCMP Cpl. James Fayle said.

Two other fires set outside Mackenzie near Ganahatz on Sunday evening remain under investigation.

Anyone with information on the incidents is asked to call Mackenzie RCMP at 50-997-3288 or anonymously contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477(TIPS) or online at www.solvecrime.ca, by text ,at BCTIP and send your message to CRIMES (274637), or via Facebook, www.facebook.com/metrovancouvercrimestoppers.
