Man arrested after high-speed drive

A spike belt was used Sunday afternoon to apprehend a speeding driver who refused to pull over, North District RCMP said this week.

A spike belt was used Sunday afternoon to apprehend a speeding driver who refused to pull over, North District RCMP said this week.

A 24-year-old man was arrested some time after a Ford F350 passed through a radar trap by Red Rock Creek, about 40 kilometres south of Prince George, well in excess of the posted limit. When the lights and siren were turned on, the driver responded by increasing his speed to more than160 km/h, RCMP said.

Two officers further north attempted to pull the truck over but backed away and Mackenzie RCMP were notified while North District RCMP traffic services officers checked the side roads all the way through to Mackenzie in case the vehicle was abandoned.

RCMP got their break when the officer who first saw the truck came across it again while heading back to Prince George from checking the side roads. The truck was seen near the Windy Point Resort at McLeod Lake, about 140 kilometres north of Prince George.

Mackenzie RCMP set up the spike belt at the Parsnip Bridge on Highway 97 just south of the junction with Highway 39. The truck did not stop and ran over the belt. With the tires flat, the driver finally stopped, exited his vehicle, placed his hands over his head and lay down on the ground, RCMP said.

The truck was impounded, the driver received an immediate 15-day license suspension and he is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 17.
