Service at the Mackenzie transfer station will be reduced to five days a week starting in the new year, the Fraser-Fort George Regional District said Tuesday.

Starting January 1, the station will be open Sunday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will be closed Friday and Saturdays and all statutory holidays.

Staffing challenges and operational efficiencies are behind the move.

"We recognize going from a seven day a week operation down to five days a week may pose an inconvenience for some residents. However our first priority is providing a safe work environment for our staff and we are challenged to do that when facing a staff shortage,” said FFGRD waste diversion program manager Laura Zapotichny said.

The regional district is seeking additional staff for the site. Information about current postings can be found at https://rdffg.prevueaps.ca/jobs
