Longtime Prince George firefighter John Iverson has been promoted to chief, city hall said in a statement issued Friday.

Iverson joined what is now Prince George Fire Rescue in April 1987, starting out as a firefighter.

He was promoted to captain in July 2009. He has also held various positions with International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1372 and the Professional Firefighters Association for nearly 20 years.

In March 2011, he was promoted into the management ranks, becoming the deputy chief, operations and has been the acting fire chief since August 2013 when John Lane resigned.

Reasons for Lane's departure have never been made public.

Iverson was selected following a nationwide search, city hall said.

Iverson "brings tremendous operational experience, labour relations expertise and leadership strength to the chief's position," city hall said.
