That first long weekend of the year in the Prince George area was free of fatal motor vehicle collisions and injury crashes on the highways.

Prince George Regional Provincial Traffic Services is pleased with the results of their efforts during the May 21 to 24 long weekend to increase police visibility and risk of being stopped.

"Again, the public has contributed to a safe long weekend by heeding the message from local media and police," RCMP Sgt. Pat McTiernan, North District Traffic Services, said in news release.

However, the weekend was far from free of traffic offenses with 362 charges and 39 written warnings processed from May 21 to May 24 on local roadways.

"While this number is down from 2009, police noticed a decrease in traffic this year. Although it's uncertain if it was the adverse weather, enhanced patrols or simply fewer motorists travelling this past weekend, the result was encouraging. Read more in the Citizen.
