Long weekend highways fatality free

North District RCMP traffic services Staff Sgt. Pat McTiernan was in a celebratory mood of his own following a Canada Day long weekend in which there were no fatalities or serious injury accidents in the region.

"We had no police officers spending the past weekend in the hospital with victims' families trying to get them through a tragic situation," McTiernan said.

He credited a bolstered police presence, the media's help in getting the message out that they will be out in force, and motorists themselves, for the outcome.

"We saw that the speeds were down from holiday weekends past, which is good," McTiernan said.

That said, four vehicles were taken off the road for alcohol-related infractions and seven were towed for excessive speeding.

Police also charged a man following a report from a member of the public of an erratic driver.

"Our units set up, they got the guy, our witness pulled up behind, statements were taken and charges were laid," McTiernan said. "That's something we encourage the public to do if there are drivers endangering the lives of others out there."

Asked whether the rain had kept drivers off the road, McTiernan said the provincial park campsites appeared full and the dispatchers were kept busy throughout the three days.
