A Hixon woman is suing the B.C. Sheriff Service for injuries she allegedly suffered while being transported in shackles and handcuffs in the back of a prisoners van

According to a notice of claim filed last week at the Prince George courthouse, Tanya Lynn Crocker suffered soft-tissue injuries to her neck, upper back, both shoulders and arms on Sept. 2, 2015 when the a bay door at Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre came down and struck the windshield.

She was not wearing a seatbelt at the time because the vehicle was not equipped with them, according to the claim.

The van's driver is also named as a defendant.

Crocker, who has a record of criminal convictions for minor offences mostly committed in Prince George and Kamloops was sentenced the next day to 30 days time served on one count of breaching probation and to 25 days in jail on another.

Crocker says she has also suffered headaches, bruises, contusions and abrasions and has needed physiotherapy and numerous visits to physicians as a result.

She is seeking damages for a "great deal of pain and discomfort" as well as for loss of income, medical and rehabilitation expenses and special damages to be determined.

The allegations have not yet been tested in court and none of the defendants have yet filed a response to the claim.
