A local resident of Prince George who's volunteered in the community for more than 18 years is the recipient of the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers.

Cindy Smith received the recognition Wednesday afternoon, along with 32 other provincial recipients, during a ceremony at Government House in Victoria. Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon awarded the medals on behalf of Governor General David Johnston.

Smith, a teacher at College Heights secondary school, was recognized for her time donated to such organizations as Scouts Canada, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Terry Fox Run and the 2015 Canada Winter Games, as well as offering her talents as a soccer coach and fundraising for victims of the Fort McMurray fire that devastated the city.

She was recognized by the Prince George Community Foundation last year as one of Prince George's 2016 Citizens of the Year.

The Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers recognizes exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians.
