Friends of a Prince George man who is battling life-threatening injuries from a single-vehicle accident near Kamloops last week are planning a fundraising drive to raise money for his family's travel expenses.
Dexter Martin, 56, was put into an induced coma at Royal Inland Hospital, longtime friend Susanna Lee said, following the July 4 accident.
Martin went off a straight section of Highway 97 near Barnhartvale Road, about 10 kilometres east of Kamloops, according to police.
Lee said she's been in constant contact with Martin's daughter and has been told he suffered fractures to his skull and has been heavily sedated to help him recover from his injuries.
Martin has been a longtime City of Prince George employe where he works as a small engine mechanic.
A barbecue is set for Princess Auto, one of Martin's favourite spots, on Saturday, July 21 as part of an effort to raise about $3,000. Hamburgers, hotdogs and wrist bracelets will be available for sale and the event will run from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
"His wife was all the way over in Nova Scotia when the accident happened so they had to get her an emergency flight back to Kamloops, of course," said Lee. "They're not saying anything to anybody but I know them very well and the expenses are getting quite high for them."
