A local man faces eight charges following Friday's bomb scare at Cottonwood Island Park.

In addition to one count of making or possessing explosives, Joseph Wayne Craig, 36, also faces a charge of causing unnecessary pain or suffering to an animal as well as two counts of possession of a firearm contrary to an order and one count each of assaulting a peace officer, willfully resisting or obstructing a peace officer, flight from a peace officer and breach of probation, according to court records.

The park was closed off for most of the day Friday after what police suspect was an explosive device was found on Craig.

The device was left in the park until the bomb squad arrived from the Lower Mainland.

"The device was found to be an explosive and was destroyed safely," RCMP said Monday.

Craig has an extensive criminal record that includes convictions for assault. He remained in custody as of Monday.
