The growth of a local not-for-profit working overseas means, for the first time in its history, a paid staff position.

The non-governmental organization 27 Million Voices is in need of a short-term fund development co-ordinator to help their efforts to combat human trafficking and industrial child slavery in West Africa and elsewhere. They were founded especially to focus on the so-called "blood chocolate" industry - forced child labour, slavery, violence and extortion to create a cheap workforce for the cocoa plantations by companies selling chocolate bars available locally.

Their two most recent projects involve getting education for kids rescued from slavery conditions working the fishing industry of Ghana, and for kids rescued from domestic servitude in Burkina Faso. They do this by working with carefully vetted overseas agencies working in the affected areas, and founder Allison Fedorkiw has made frequent trips there to forge those relationships and to spot future opportunities to help.

The group will pay a part-time new employee to develop a fundraising plan (subject to board approval) and implement it over a three-month period. The position is home-based.

"With a view to increase our programming both in Canada and abroad, 27MV is hiring a fund development co-ordinator," said a statement from the group. "Reporting to the 27MV board of directors, the fund development co-ordinator will be responsible for fundraising and fostering relationships for 27MV."

They estimate the job to take 12-20 hours per week for the three-month pilot period, with potential for extending the arrangement.
