The liquor control and licensing board granted a break on the distance requirement for the new liquor store about to go into the Coast Inn of the North.
As of February, licensees have been prohibited from relocating a store within one kilometre of another, an increase from the previous limit of 500 metres, and the Coast Inn is about 700 metres away from the Shooters liquor store at Redwood Mall on Victoria Street.
But the LCLB general manager has some leeway, according to ministry of public safety and solicitor general spokeswoman Tasha Schollen.
"In certain circumstances the Liquor Control and Licensing Branch general manager may approve a relocation within 1,000 metres such as if for example, a licensee loses their leased location due to circumstances beyond their control and the only reasonable location is within one kilometre of another store," she said in an e-mail.
"In this case, the general manager was satisfied that the licensee met the requirements to allow the relocation to proceed."
