Light agenda for inaugural council meeting

The new city council will have a light agenda for their inaugural meeting on Monday.

Oaths of Office

Mayor elect Shari Green and councillors elect Frank Everitt, Garth Frizzell, Lyn Hall, Albert Koehler, Murry Krause, Brian Skakun, Cameron Stolz and Dave Wilbur will swear their oaths of office in ceremony starting at 6 p.m. at City Hall.

Two other bookkeeping measures - the 2011-2012 council schedule and acting mayor list - are also on the agenda.

Fee increase

Also up for consideration will be a 2.8 per cent increase to the city's business fees.

Under the proposed increase, the annual business license for a restaurant would increase $6 to $237 per year. For a car dealership the increase will amount to $24 per year.

On Nov. 7 city council unanimously approved the first three readings of the bylaw which puts the fee increases - along with an increase to development application fees - in effect. Council will consider the fourth and final reading of the bylaw on Monday.

Currently the city recovers approximately 15 per cent of the cost of processing development applications through fees. The bylaw, if approved, would increase that percentage to 17 per cent - resulting in a $50 to $200 increase in cost for a typical multifamily townhouse application.

Tax break

Council will consider requesting permission from the B.C. Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development to provide a $3,061 tax exemption to the Prince George Masonic Temple.

In 2011, the nonprofit portion of the Masonic temple was reclassified to the business class - resulting in property taxes owing.

The Masonic temple has requested a review of the change to its tax status, but the city requires provincial permission to write off property taxes owed by any landowner.
