Parents, caregivers, if your children are tuned into tablets and e-readers, head down to the library Saturday at 1 p.m. for a free workshop.
Beyond Books will feature the latest and most educational online apps and e-books for young children.
"Technology is part of children's reality," said Kaitlyn Vardy, children's librarian at the Prince George Public Library. "It's engaging and children love it. I read an eBook during Storytime today at the library and the kids really enjoyed interacting with it."
Technology is just going to keep improving and there will be more and more of it, Vardy added.
"During the workshop we will inform parents that they are able to have a shared reading experience with a digital e-book and have a very similar experience as they would with a print book," said Vardy. "We will show them how to decipher which is a really good app or e-book, as opposed to those that are not as good and not as educational, because there's good ones, and not so good ones."
An e-book is the digital version of a print book and it's what you would read on a device like an iPad or tablet, e-reader or even on a computer.
This workshop is more of a show and tell so the discussion will be focussed on general information so the iPads and tablets will be projected onto a screen so everyone will follow along together, Vardy explained.
The workshop is geared for parents with children under the age of 12.
Using e-readers is beneficial to children because they control the book and the actions of the characters, if parents choose the right apps and e-books, said Vardy.
"This builds the children's confidence because they are in control of the book," Vardy concluded.
