Sign language wasn't necessary to indicate to Andrea Palmer that something was amiss at the Prince George Public Library Tuesday morning.

Palmer was leading the Baby Time and Baby Sign program at the Bob Harkins branch when she noticed water streaming down a post.

The water, which had pooled in the front of the self-checkout stations and closed the access to the parking lot exit, was the result of a hose clamp coming loose from the heat pump, explained chief librarian Allan Wilson.

"It spilled water into the electrical system and the computers," he said, adding future checks will be made to ensure the water, which was dripping into the covered parking lot, doesn't pool and freeze in the concrete.

Palmer said staff also managed to save the library's fundraising calendars from the flooded storage room.

The library remains open throughout the cleanup, with the only interruptions coming to the morning's baby programming and the set up of the library's art installation.

After reporting the leak, Palmer - also the library's communications co-ordinator - returned to her group and let them know that their room was no longer functional.

"I said, 'Do you want to cut it short today, or relocate to the couch corner?'" Palmer asked the collected parents and babies. She got a rousing response to keep the activity going.

"They did not want to give up. It was the sweetest thing," she said, despite the fact that at this point some of the lights had gone out and an uncomfortable noise was coming through the PA system. "They're such troopers. It was really inspiring."
