B.C. Liberal leadership candidate Moira Stillwell boldly introduced health care reform into the campaign today, saying in Prince George the province must have a discussion on the role of private health care.

She also proposed the system be altered to provide more services to the sickest patients, which may cost more money up front but would save money in the long run.

Stillwell also called for an expansion and better co-ordination of mental health services, and improved health-care training in rural and northern British Columbia.

Stillwell, who is a physician, is not calling for a commission or over-arching examination of problems. Instead, she said the province should look to the jewels in the system like the B.C. Cancer Ageny for examples on how to introduce successful change. "There's will in the system -- it's a matter of getting it organized," she said at a family practice clinic that had yet to open its doors to patients early Tuesday morning.

Asked who should be responsible for overseeing the changes, Stillwell said the minister of health.
