Putting local aboriginal candidates in direct touch with local employers is the theme of a
Feb. 11 event hosted by the Lheidli T'enneh First Nation.
For the second time in as many years, the LTFN will hold a career fair to help boost their specific economy and help the broader one at the same time.
"Employers can connect with motivated community members and introduce their company, career options, and current and future employment opportunities for Lheidli T'enneh members," said Barbara Allan, the capacity development and training officer for the LTFN. "Lheidli T'enneh community members will gain valuable knowledge to improve their job search skills, resume development skills, and drafting effective cover letters - career development tools for sustainable employment."
The convergence happens on Feb. 11 at the Coast Inn of the North from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lunch will be provided for participants - aboriginal and broader community alike.
Based on the success of last year's event, and the feedback leading into this year's edition, Allan said she anticipated about 20 booths would be occupied by industry and business. All of them would be eager to collect resumes and shake the hands of potential employees. Anyone interested in having a booth of their own can contact 250-562-0847.
The capacity builders and economic developers of the LTFN are giving the event some extra punch by adding some preliminary material. Workshops will be held for their members who want to brush up their resumes, craft a better cover letter, and get advice on making good impressions on potential employers. That way, when the career fair takes place, they will be primed.
"For a lot of people looking for work opportunities at the career fair, you should bring a number of resumes to pass out at all the industry booths you might be interested in, and that's why we encourage community members to come out to the workshops in advance and learn about how to get those materials ready, and also build your confidence and self-esteem."
For more information on attending one of the preliminary workshops, call Zishan Shah at 250-562-0847 ext. 202.
The career fair is a collaboration with the New Relationship Trust, an independent not-for-profit organization dedicated to strengthening First Nations in B.C. through improvements to governance capacity, education, language and culture, youth and elders, and economic development.
