Lheidli T’enneh First Nation is inviting the entire community to come to Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park tomorrow to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day (NIPD)
The event will include a day full of Indigenous artisans, musicians, drummers, dancers, activities for kids, Bannock and other tasty food.
“The response from the community to our call to participate and join us for National Indigenous Peoples Day has been outstanding. While the focus of the day is to celebrate Indigenous heritage in Canada, our NIPD in Prince George has really become about our unique community, collaboration, and Truth and Reconciliation in action,” said Lheidli T’enneh Chief Dolleen Logan.
While the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation is the official host of NIPD, the day is filled with participation from other Nations in the region, from community partners such as the Prince George Native Friendship Center, the Prince George Metis Community Association, the City of Prince George, the Regional District, the Prince George Public Library, UNBC, CNC, School District 57, and many others.
“This is not just a Lheidli T’enneh event. With the overwhelming support from sponsors and participation by community partners it has become a community event that everyone feels welcome to attend and enjoy.”
The schedule is also filled with cultural activities and live entertainment going all the way from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. in the evening.
The schedule has been extended into the evening so those who are working or unavailable during the day can still participate in the celebrations.
“The response from sponsors and community partners to participate in this year’s NIPD Celebration has been amazing. Many sponsors and community partners were eager to find a way to participate and support when they heard that the event was back on,” said 2022 NIPD Event Manager, and Manager of Communications & Engagement at the Prince George Public Library, Jen Rubadeau.
“There is a star-studded entertainment program of local and national Indigenous performers such as Kym Gouchie, Joel West, Rick Stavely, the Old Fort Traditional Dancers, the Khast’an Drummers, and the UNHBC Drummers. We are also thrilled that Chubby Cree, a grandmother and 12-year-old grandson hand drum duo who have been getting a significant amount of national coverage, are sure to Rock Your World!”
School District No. 57 (SD57) is also participating in the events and will be bussing in students from throughout the district to partake in the celebrations during school hours.
“I think Chief Logan said it best: NIPD is a great example of community collaboration and is an event for the entire community,” added Rubadeau.
