The place that's been the home of the Royal Canadian Legion in Prince George for almost 50 years is up for sale.

John Scott, second vice-president and chair of the housing committee, said the building on 7th Avenue is now on the market because we have to downsize.

"It's too large for our membership and our uses with the exception of Remembrance Day," Scott said.

The cost of heating, lighting, maintenance and taxes is just too overwhelming for the membership which is not growing these days.

"As well, we have a large mortgage debt that needs servicing," Scott said of the building that was built by the Legion in the early 1960s. Prior to that, the Legion was located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Quebec Street, directly across from the post office on Fifth Avenue.

"Our parking is not so good anymore since we lost parking space along 7th Avenue across from our building... and our own parking lot often used by people going to the Civic Centre, Four Seasons Pool and other neighbouring sites."

The legion is hoping for help from the city to work out a new plan and a new home for the veterans who hope to stay in the downtown core.

"The city prefers that we stay downtown and it's central for us to service the whole area," said Scott.

The two-story building on 7th Avenue offers 20,000 square feet, but the organization would prefer a one-story home of about 8,000 square feet.

"The younger people would prefer a newer and brighter facility which will be part of the new design," said Scott.

"Right now we don't have a building in mind, although we've checked several out."

He said next week an expert building and housing consultant with the BC Yukon Legion Command from Vancouver will meet with the Legion executive to advise on finding a new home.

"We're not going to fold up. We will survive," said Scott, who is confident all the activities now offered by the Legion, including kitchen and bar services, will be continued.

The Elks Club, which now rents space in the Legion building is also up in the air at the moment, but hopefully our new home may also be able to include that organization, he said.
