Lane closure Monday for library construction

The Prince George Public Library will be a littler cooler Monday morning - and not just because of some new releases.

Construction continues on the SkyLab project in the Bob Harkins branch March 26 with the removal of several windows in the southeast corner - where the newspapers and magazine racks sit - to to allow a crane to swing steel beams into the library.

During this effort, one of the two westbound lanes of Patricia Boulevard along the library and the Civic Centre will be closed to traffic until some time Monday afternoon.

Once the crane has hoisted and swung the beams in place, the windows will be reinstalled and full use of Patricia Boulevard will be restored.

"The current weather forecast is for eight degrees and sunny for Monday," said chief library Allan Wilson. "The library will open at 10 a.m. as usual and it will be a little cooler than normal upstairs, but it'll be quite a sight to see for everyone."

Access to about one-third of the top floor of the downtown branch will be restricted starting Sunday, as shelves and several of the library's inside trees have to be removed temporarily. Work crews will also be on site Saturday, building scaffolding outside on the deck in preparation for Monday's movements.

When construction is finished later this spring, SkyLab will add nearly 1,000 square feet of new space for public access to computers and the Internet at the Bob Harkins branch. Comfortable arm chairs and other seating will let library users read and enjoy the views inside and outside the library from SkyLab's upper-level mezzanine.
