The latest round of increases to tipping fees at local garbage dumps have been formalized.
On Thursday, the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George approved a bylaw cementing the planned $5 hike to tipping fees at the Foothills and Mackenzie landfills and respective 6.9 per cent increases to fees at the Valemount and McBride transfer stations.
A charge of $77 per tonne for waste at the landfills comes into effect on Jan. 1.
Tipping fees at the Foothills landfill will reach a maximum of $90 per tonne by 2019, according to a financial plan approved in 2013.
The regional district is in the midst of another round of consultation for its solid waste management plan. Originally developed in 2008, proposed updates to encourage waste reduction include encouraging more recycling by businesses and multi-family buildings, holding reuse events across the region and setting residential garbage can limits and garbage cart fees.
Solid waste management currently has a $9.5 million budget, and the proposals are expected to increase that budget by $400,000 over the next five years.
