A back-country skier lost his life in an avalanche that came down in Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park near Nelson, B.C. Monday.

The man, who was buried in the snow slide, was among a group of 15 adult skiers from Alberta and B.C. The man was rescued from the snow within five minutes by companions, but never regained consciousness and succumbed shortly to life-threatening injuries.

The remainder of the group were uninjured.

Poor weather conditions prevented the recovery of the deceased man until Monday morning.

At that time, two helicopters were used to get avalanche technicians up to the mountain to stabilize the slope. Then a search and rescue team was sent in to safely recover the body.

The RCMP police dog section also had an avalanche dog on standby to relocate the body in case it was displaced during the stabilization process.

The name of the deceased is not being released at this time, but Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said further details will be provided when available.
