With challenges like 'we're 100 years old so we know everything' from the Prince George Citizen and 'we have a team of intelligent and fierce competitors to ensure the win' from Northern Health, it's hard to resist coming out to see who takes top spot during the Trivia Competition.
This first annual fundraising event presented by the Prince George Council of Seniors (PGCOS) takes place Saturday, Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. and is hosted by the North Central Seniors Association at 5401 Moriarty Crescent in the basement of the College Heights Baptist Church.
The evening, geared for fun on National Seniors Day, offers a roast beef dinner with all the trimmings to fill bellies before the brains have to kick in.
Three judges have the final word if there's any dispute. They include the distinguished Howard Foot, Frank Overand and Fred Archibald.
The first round is a written challenge of several questions right off the bat, as the dozen or so teams of six deliberate over the correct answers. A timer will be put into effect to keep things hopping. After that questions will be answered by one member of each team.
City councilor Susan Scott, is putting together a team, Northern Health, The Citizen, Nechako Rotary, Native Friendship Centre, UNBC, the Prince George Public Library, Elder Citizens Recreation Association and North Central Seniors are all confirmed with several other teams still putting together their teams.
"This is really incredible and we need spectators as well because they do the applause and heckling to make it fun," said Lola Dawn Fennel, general manager of the PGCOS. "We've even heard there's talk of team names and costumes."
Fennell has been asked where the questions are coming from.
"Are they coming from the Trivial Pursuit game?" said Fennell. "No, they are not. We got the questions from a community group in South Burnaby Delta that's had a trivia night for about 15 years now. I've looked the questions over and I think some of them are going to be a snap and some of them are going to be stumpers. So there's a nice variety. I tried out some of the questions on our public relations committee and they did a lot of 'oh, I know this one it's, it's, it's' and that's where they kind of stopped, which I expect we'll see a lot of on October 1."
Categories include math, science and medicine; music and entertainment; geography and history; sports; literature and language; and religion and politics.
There are draw prizes and all who attend will be eligible to win with their entry ticket. The trivia contest winners will get their ticket cost reimbursed and bragging rights, with some prizes to go with the honour.
To get tickets for $25 each call the PGCOS at 250-564-5888 or drop by their office at 721 Victoria Street.
