A sledgehammer struck the side of the vacant building with a dull smack. A puff of stucco and the crumbs of old Prince George wafted out onto the sidewalk. A round of applause went up as the man swinging the hammer, land developer Dan McLaren, declared, "There is the start of the new downtown."
The crowd gathered round was on a quick field trip across the street from the Ramada Hotel where they had been taking part in the 'Let's Get Started...18 Months Later' conference on downtown revitalization. The building getting the beats was once a cafe but is part of a parcel of old structures including the Prince George Hotel purchased for the purpose of demolition and new construction.
