In Prince George, the school zone speed limit is 30 km/hr, in effect Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Hey Prince George drivers.

Just a reminder; students are back in classrooms and school zones are now in effect from 8 a.m-5 p.m..

If you speed and go beyond the 30 kilometres-per-hour limit, not only are you a risk to the safety our children but it might cost you a lot of money.

Prince George RCMP officers, backed by staff from the RCMP’s BC Highway Patrol and Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement as well as Citizens on Patrol volunteers, are out patrolling school zone throughout the month of September with radar guns in hand.

RCMP Cpl. Jennifer Cooper says the days are getting shorter and before long students will be soon going to school in the dark. Weather patterns are changing and the city frequently develops foggy conditions in the morning so drivers should be extra cautions when visibility is impaired by darkness or fog.

“We want to make sure drivers are watching out for all these changes, just slowing down in our school zones and watching out for the kids going to and from, especially in dropoff and pickups hours when we see more congestion around school zones and a lot more pedestrian traffic,” said Cooper.

“We really like to remind people in September because they’ve had two months off, July and August, without worrying about school zones. Just because you’re in a rush doesn’t mean you can risk racing though a school zone when you've got, especially our young kids, heading to school in a new grade with new friends, they're distracted themselves and aren't paying attention and it's up to us drivers to watch put for them.”

Playground zones are in effect every day from dawn to dusk and the speed limit through those zones is also 30 km/hr.
