Prince George RCMP are warning residents about a rash of break and enters in the city.
Here are ten things you can do to make your home a hard target for thieves:
1. Exterior doors should be at least 1.75 inches thick with a solid core of wood or metal. Avoid paneled doors, they are thin and easily broken. Any glass panes in doors should be "unbreakable."
2. Use sturdy three-inch screws to attach door hinges and striker plates to the door frame.
3. Use a good quality, brand name dead bolt with at least a one-inch throw which extends well into the striker plate.
4. Install anti-lift devices and good auxiliary locks on sliding glass doors and windows. Wooden dowels or bars can be placed in the track of a sliding door or window to prevent it from being forced open.
5. Install an oversize door viewer. Never open your door to a stranger.
6. Keep valuables in less likely places to be searched. Jewelry boxes are always checked.
7. Keep windows locked when you're not home, even in warm weather.
8. Trim plants around windows and doors to keep lines of visibility.
6. Consider a monitored alarm system and an intercom to hear callers at your door without opening it.
7. Report suspicious persons or vehicles immediately to the police. Don't wait.
8. Get to know your neighbours. Keep an eye out for them and they will keep an eye out for you.
9. Contact the Community Policing Office at 250-561-3366 to join Block Watch, Crime-Free Multi
Housing or Rural Crime Watch. Community Policing also offers a free home security evaluation or comprehensive security evaluation for your business.
10. If going out of town for a holiday, consider having a house sitter while you are away so your house is not empty.
