A helicopter was called in Saturday evening to rescue a kayaker stranded on an island in the middle of the Bowron River.

The man had dipped into the river at the Bowron River rest stop on Highway 16 east of Prince George on Saturday with the intention of meeting up with his family later in the afternoon.

When he failed to show up, RCMP were contacted and, in turn, Prince George Search and Rescue was called out at about 6:30 p.m.

Members quickly located him on the island and the helicopter was used to pick him up.

"The subject had greatly underestimated the time it would take to complete the trip as well as the skill level required to kayak the stretch of river," PGSAR said.

"Once the subject realized he would be incapable of completing his trip, he stopped before going through any more challenging and dangerous water and had the skills and abilities to start a fire, build a small shelter and wait for help."
