The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George (RDFFG) is reopening swap shed as multiple transfer stations starting Saturday, April 16.
Swap sheds allow residents to drop off clean, useable items in good condition for other residents to take at no charge. It provides a way to extend the life of a product for somebody else to use.
“We are pleased to have the swap sheds in operation again at McBride, Valemount, Mackenzie and Shelley,” says Rachael Ryder, Waste Diversion Program Leader with RDFFG.
The RDFFG had closed a number of swap sheds in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Swap sheds give new life to usable household items that can find a new home. One person’s junk is another’s treasure so the swap shed is a great alternative to just throwing something away.”
Accepted items at the swap sheds include clothing, books, toys, sporting goods and furniture.
Items dropped off should be clean and in a reusable condition. The swap sheds are cleaned regularly and those using them are asked to follow health and safety protocols on site, with 1-2 people in the Swap Shed at one time.
RDFFG also notes that thrift stores are a good alternative to take clean usable household items to for areas not served by swap sheds.
