The Prince George Citizen is adding to its roster with the appointment of Andrea Johnson as its new sports reporter.

Johnson comes to The Citizen from the College of New Caledonia, where she spent the past five years as a writer and editor for the school's communications department.

An award-winning journalist, Johnson was recognized in her 13-year career with community newspapers by the Canadian Community Newspapers Association, the B.C. Yukon Community Newspapers Association and Black Press. She has worked in Rocky Mountain House, Alta., White Rock and was editor of the Quesnel Observer for three years.

Johnson holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of Alberta and a journalism diploma from Mount Royal University.

Since arriving in Prince George in 2009, Johnson has been an active community volunteer. She currently sits on the Nechako Rotary Club board of directors as past president and handles public relations for Operation Red Nose. For the past two years, she has served on the team organizing Prince George's Relay for Life.

"Andrea is well-known and respected among the local media for her work at CNC and I have volunteered with Andrea through Rotary," said Citizen managing editor Neil Godbout. "She's a hard worker, a solid writer and she'll fit in great with our team of reporters, photographers and editors here at The Citizen."

An avid follower of curling and tennis, as well as a die-hard Edmonton Oilers fan, Johnson starts at The Citizen today, covering the first round of the playoffs tonight at the B.C. Women's Scotties curling championships at the Prince George Golf and Curling Club.
