The Persian residents of Prince George gathered in the community square beside the Wood Innovation Centre downtown on Saturday morning to protest against the Iranian government’s regime.

Mahsa Amini, 22, died last week after being arrested by Iran's morality police for "unsuitable attire" after she allegedly wore a hijab improperly.

Her death sparked outrage in Iran and thousands have gathered in protest of the Islamic republic government’s oppressive laws against women’s freedoms.

The poignantly peaceful protest held in Prince George saw organizers and speakers make emotional pleas for a change in government to offer more opportunities for women in Iran.

“We are protesting in solidarity, not only with the people of Iran but for women's rights,” said one speaker.

“Women, life, freedom,” the crowd of about 80 people chanted in response.
