British Columbia’s police watchdog is investigating a shooting involving officers near Prince George that left one man with non-life-threatening injuries.
According to the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC, the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, when members of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, Prince George RCMP, and the Emergency Response Team encountered a man in a rural area outside the city.
Police say the man fired a gun at officers before fleeing in a dark-coloured Volvo. No officers were injured in the initial exchange.
The vehicle was later located near a forest service road, where a second exchange of gunfire took place. The man, who was driving the Volvo, was shot and taken to hospital for treatment.
The IIO was notified shortly after the incident and has launched an investigation to determine whether police actions or inaction contributed to the man's injuries.
Under the Police Act, the IIO investigates all officer-involved incidents in BC that result in serious harm or death, regardless of whether there is an allegation of wrongdoing.
