The College of New Caledonia has been recognized by the Global Best Awards for its research forest.

It tied for silver at the awards for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) for the North America region. The International education-business Partnership Network handed out the awards in Oslo, Norway last week.

CNC president Henry Reiser said the college is extremely excited about the nod.

"The college is very proud of our innovative projects, which unite our educational programming with our local industry needs," he said in a statement. "These sort of partnerships are a great model of how we would like to see education and training develop in the future, and we are delighted to be leaders on such a global scale."

In a press release, CNC said it the award praised the partnership between Dunkley Lumber and the CNC Research Forest Society.

Each year the college and its business partner harvests and sells about 30,000 cubic metres of timber from the 12,500-hectare forest. That revenue is used to fund the Natural Resources and Environmental Technology program, which has used the forest since 2008.

"We are proud to see CNC recognized for the effort that they are making to develop strong partnerships with local industry and the community at large," said Doug Perdue, Chief Forester for Dunkley Lumber in a statement. "Dunkley finds it rewarding to partner with CNC on managing the Research Forest. Working with the NRET instructors and students along with the Research Forest staff on forest management and research at CNC has been a great experience."

The program offers an outdoor teaching facility for students and works with regional companies, First Nations and community members to research and develop solutions for challenges facing natural resource sectors.
