The B.C. Coroners Service has scheduled a public inquest into the death of a man while in Prince George RCMP cells.
Jamie Wilford Shanoss, 51, died during the early morning of Nov. 21, 2016, a few hours after he had been taken into custody for allegedly being drunk in a public place.
The inquest will begin on Sept. 17 at the courthouse, 9:30 a.m. start.
Under the Coroners Act, inquests are mandatory for any deaths that occur in the custody of a peace officer.
Presiding coroner Donita Kuzma and a jury will hear evidence from witnesses under oath to determine the facts surrounding Shanoss's death and determine whether there are opportunities for a jury to make recommendations that may prevent deaths in similar circumstances.
