A sentencing hearing was delayed Dec. 12 for a man charged with multiple dangerous driving and driving while prohibited offences and possession of stolen property.

Warren Chad Johnny, born in 1993, was scheduled to appear in Prince George Provincial Court for sentencing related to incidents that took place in Prince George in September 2022, January and February 2023 and in Vanderhoof in August and October 2022.

The court docket shows 20 counts against Johnny across seven charge files.

Johnny’s defence lawyer Jason LeBlond told the court that he had just spoken with Johnny, who asked for the delay due to an illness that was not disclosed in court.

LeBlond said Johnny was being held in the Prince George courthouse cells after arriving Dec. 11 from Kamloops. He had been previously held in the Lower Mainland.

“When I spoke to Mr. Johnny in cells this morning, he indicated to me that he was feeling quite unwell. He explained some of the symptoms, which I won't go into with your honour,” LeBlond said to Judge Judith Doulis. “His request is, can we do this tomorrow or the next day?”

LeBlond said his client did not expect to be any better in the afternoon. He did not ask for a lengthy delay, but just long enough for his client to recover.

Among Johnny’s offences is dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm. The court heard that victims of a motor vehicle collision involving Johnny were in court, ready to deliver their victim impact statement.

“Well, I'm certainly not in a position to question whether someone isn't really feeling well right now, so I'm quite happy to stand it down,” Doulis said.

Doulis adjourned the matter to Dec. 17 for a judicial case manager to schedule a new date for a one-day sentencing hearing.
