The Independent Investigations Office has been called in to investigate after a man was found dead in a Prince George RCMP cell early Monday morning.

The man, whose name was not released, had been taken into custody sometime after 11:30 a.m. when local Mounties were called to reports of an intoxicated man causing a disturbance in the

100 block of Quebec Street.

Police located the man in the 1200 block of Second Avene where the man was arrested for being drunk in public and taken into the detachment.

Shortly after 2 a.m. Monday, a cell check found the man to be unresponsive. Ambulance personnel were called in while RCMP members initiated CPR.

Upon arrival, resuscitation efforts were taken over by a medical team and the man was pronounced dead shortly before 3 a.m.

The IIO, the civilian-based watchdog that investigates police-involved deaths and serious injuries for criminal wrongdoing, is now investigating, Prince George RCMP said. The RCMP has also initiated an Independent Officer Review of the incident according to existing policies, the detachment added.
