With the help of heavy equipment, work began Tuesday on breaking up the ice plugging a back channel through Cottonwood Island Park.
Meant to provide a release valve for ice-jammed Nechako River, the work should take the rest of the week to complete and will cost $97,000 and be paid for entirely by Emergency Management B.C., city spokesman Rob Van Adrichem said.
Ice cover on the river remained unchanged on Tuesday, extending about 12 kilometres from the confluence with the Fraser River.
A level one emergency, which means the river is being monitored around the clock, remains in place.
