Parks and trails remain closed near Nechako River even as river conditions and water levels remain stable.

The City of Prince George said Wednesday the head of the ice has moved upstream along the Nechako River and beyond city limits from its previous position at Pharoah Road.

It added both the the river and its confluence with the Fraser River are now stable almost two weeks after the ice jam reached emergency status.

City crews and the Prince George Fire Rescue Service are monitoring conditions Wednesday, the release said.

After people were seen walking on the ice on Christmas Eve day, the city said Cottonwood Island Park and the Heritage River Trail are closed to the public from the Cameron Street Bridge to Kiwanis Park.

Crews have erected signs and barricades at the entrance to the boat and canoe launch parking lots, the Replica Bridge, and along the Heritage River Trail.

But those barricades had been removed over the weekend and vehicles driven in the closed parking lots.

"The public is advised that venturing out onto the river ice is an extreme hazard and are asked to refrain from entering the park until further notice," the release said.

Last week, city crews used heavy equipment to break up the ice plugging a back channel through Cottonwood Island Park. The work was expected to take a week at a cost of $97,000 paid by Emergency Management B.C.
