Hydro building boosts building permit total

Led by a new $25-million building for B.C. Hydro, permits for $35.8 million worth of work were issued in April, according to a city staff report. The number boosted the year-to-date total to $48.4 million, compared to $16.

The number boosted the year-to-date total to $48.4 million, compared to $16.3 million by the same point last year and $26.9 million by the end of April 2010.

Land clearing is underway at Hydro's Prince George headquarters at 3333-22nd Ave., across from the College of New Caledonia, to make way for a new parking lot while the new building is planned for the old parking lot. A groundbreaking ceremony will be held in June.

Permits for several other significant projects were issued:

- A new Honda dealership at 2879 Highway 16 West, worth $2.8 million;

- A new city yard office at 4050-18th Ave., worth $2 million;

- A new medical office and residential apartments at 625 Vancouver Street, worth $1.3 million;

- A new BBK Bottle Depot at 2614 Petersen Rd., worth $900,000;

- Improvements to FYi doctors at 841 West Central St., worth $485,700;

- Improvements to BC Assessment at 1488 Fourth Ave., worth $450,000;

- A new duplex at 6885-6895 Domano Blvd., worth $352, 278.

And eight permits for single family homes worth $1.8 million in total were issued. Year-to-date, the total stood at 33 permits for $8.1 million, up from from 24 permits for $5.4 million by the end of April 2011 but down from 38 permits for $8.8 million by the end of April 2010.

Commercial development permits were issued for:

- An addition for new office space at 1811 Victoria St. for Bel-Air Motel Ltd.;

- Construction of a new building for Honda dealership and Eric Moore at 140 Quebec St.;

- Reconstruction of a commercial building at 2500 Range Rd. for Wheaton Investments.

- Replacing the existing building and adding the additional building to the site at 1023 Central St. for Burger King Restaurants of Canada.
