The Stop the HST petition campaign is off to a strong start.

As of Wednesday, four days into the effort, 746 people in Prince George-Valemount, 438 in Prince George-Mackenzie and 186 in Nechako Lakes have signed the petition against the tax.

"This is a good start but we have a long way to go," said Eric Allen, one of the local organizers.

They need to collect at least 3,427 signatures in Prince George-Valemount, 3,243 in Prince George-Mackenzie and 1,615 in Nechako Lakes by July 5.

Allen is hopeful the pace will pick up even more with the establishment of a signing office in the Professional Building at 1705-Third Avenue. It's open Tuesday to Friday, noon to 6 p.m., and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

If the signatures of more than 10 per cent of the registered voters in each of B.C.'s 85 provincial ridings are collected, it would force MLAs to either take the issue to referendum or reconsider the legislation to implement the HST, although there is some question over whether the result would be binding on the federal government in any way.
