How to prepare for power outages in the winter months

The winter season can be turbulent and uncertain when it comes to power distribution. Heavy snow, ice and rain can cause big problems and even outages, so it is good to be prepared for times that you may be without power.

BC Hydro suggests having emergency contacts at the ready like police, fire and ambulance. You can also save BC Hydro's number to report an outage, which is 1-800-224-9376.

An emergency kit isn't a bad thing to have around either. BC Hydro suggests filling it with flashlights, batteries, a first aid kit, bottled water, non-perishable foods and some games to keep everyone occupied.

During an outage, the number one rule is to never go near or touch a downed power line. BC Hydro advises you to always assume that a line or anything in contact with it is energized. They say to stay at least 10 metres away at all times, and report it by calling 911.
