Hot fire, little damage

A roof repair crew has more work to do than they bargained for, after a fire broke out at their job site.

On Thursday at about 6:20 p.m., a four-story commercial building caught fire in the 2100 block of 10th Avenue.

Prince George Fire Rescue Service (PGFRS) dispatched 16 firefighters from three halls.

Upon arrival, crews saw black smoke and located a small but

intense blaze.

"Fire crews quickly extinguished the fire," assistant chief Drew Larsen said shortly after the incident was resolved.

"Crews also checked the fourth floor for fire extension but found it was clear of fire."

The design of the building played a major role in the fire's confinement, said deputy fire chief John Iverson following the investigation on Friday.

"The main part of the roof was concrete, so we had some roofing membrane and insulation burning on top of concrete. That was very fortunate.

"It could have been worse had it not been for the concrete barrier," Iverson said.

Following the fire, an investigation was done of the scene.

"There was a roofing crew doing some repairs on the building earlier in the day," Iverson

explained. "We believe a malfunction in a propane line hooked to a tank the roofing crew had up there was a factor in this fire."
