One step closer to getting the Maldi-Tof Mass Spectrometer for the hospital, the Auxiliary to UHNBC has donated $50,000 to the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation.

The spectrometer is an important piece of diagnostic equipment to upgrade the University Hospital of Northern B.C.'s laboratory. With the addition of the spectrometer, outcomes for many patients will be positively affected. The Maldi-Tof Mass Spectrometer is an advancement in clinical microbiology where testing for infectious disease can be conducted so that it can be targeted effectively.

The cost of the Maldi-Tof Mass Spectrometer is $300,000 and the fundraising for it started at the 22nd annual Festival of Trees last month, which garnered $122,000, so with the auxiliary's $50,000 that brings the total to $172,000 said Judy Neiser, CEO for Spirit of the North.

"The Auxiliary is once again overjoyed to help fund badly needed equipment for our hospital," said Linda Hohn, Auxiliary to UHNBC president.

Neiser said the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation has a great partnership with the auxiliary.

"Their membership believes in making a difference that impacts patient care and positive health outcomes, and this equipment has such a broad reach that it seemed a perfect fit," said Neiser. "We are very thankful for their generous contribution."
