Homeowner given extension on remediation

The City of Prince George has given home owners Ken and Norma Dow an extension to complete some of the remedial works ordered on their home at 450 Tofield St. On Sept.

The City of Prince George has given home owners Ken and Norma Dow an extension to complete some of the remedial works ordered on their home at 450 Tofield St.

On Sept. 12 city council ordered the Dows to repair the roofing, siding, half-finished porch and other problems with the home. The couple were given 30 days to do the work before the city would step in to complete it, then bill them for the work.

On Monday city council voted to extend the deadline for work requiring a building permit to Dec. 15. However no extension was granted for the Dows to remove debris from the yard, complete the shingling, siding, facia board and soffit.

"The thing was a piece of crap - we only paid $30,000 for it," Ken Dow told council Monday. "We've got to do almost two years work in two-three months."

Dow said he acknowledges the work needs done, but the timeline to complete it is unrealistic, he said.

"All of the sudden the city descended on us. The first we heard of it was when something was shoved under the door," Dow said.

City bylaw services manager Guy Gusdal said sections of the siding have been removed since the mid 1980s. Sections of the roof shingling have been missing since 2006 and the garage door has been replaced by a tarp since 2010.

Neighbours of the Dows told the Citizen it was long overdue for the city to step in and force the work to be done.
