Homeless count set for May 16, 17

A round-the-clock effort to determine the number of homeless people in Prince George is set for next month.

A round-the-clock effort to determine the number of homeless people in Prince George is set for next month.

Organized by Community Partners Addressing Homelessness, about 50 volunteers working in teams of two will be hitting the shelters, service agencies and community centres around the city over a 24-hour period starting on May 16 at 6 p.m.

They'll check out the places the homeless often spend the night when they can't find shelter indoors or simply choose to stay outside.

When a similar survey was conducted in May 2008, 375 people were interviewed. Of that total, 259 said they considered themselves homeless including 190 men and 113 women.

"The plan is to make the count a bi-annual event so that we can better understand the character of homelessness in our community and appreciate the adaptive responses local services are making in their efforts to respond to this significant problem," CPAH officials said in a press release.
