The 40th annual Northern B.C. Home and Garden Show, hosted by the Canadian Home Builder's Association of Northern B.C., is set to kick off Friday.

"Although the home show has opened with snow on the ground more than once in past years, it does remind us that the time for outdoor living is either here or just around the corner," said CHBA executive officer Terri McConnachie.

"We are motivated to get planning for those small and larger jobs in and around our homes and yards. Perhaps a fresh coat of paint is in order or a redesign of outdoor living spaces?

"Will the roof last another winter and is it finally time to upgrade to more energy-efficient windows and home mechanical systems? After winter has cleared, we treasure the approach of the planting and growing season. Builders are in full swing with their new home projects and folks are contacting us to research potential renovators."

The show will host various activities including: a birdhouse silent auction with proceeds going to the Prince George Hospice Society, the Mainline Plumbing & Heating Beat Up BBQ Contest and Home Depot Little Builder's Workshops.

The Rona Kutthroat Construction Competition is always a favourite as Bragg Construction, Burleigh Building and Piche Homes will build on site during the show and visitors are invited to vote for their favorite playhouse.

The Prince George Parkinson's Support Group and the Firefighter's Burn Fund are the recipients of all funds raised at this year's show.

The event raised more than $30,000 for charities last year.

The show will open with a ribbon cutting and cake at 3 p.m. Friday at the main entrance at Exhibition Park.

"Our association plans for the annual home show all year long and invests an enormous amount of time and resources to hosting the event for our community," McConnachie said.

"It would not be possible if it were not for the thousands of visitors attending year after year. As a small token of appreciation, the board of directors will host a free pancake breakfast on April 23 from 9 to 11 a.m."

The show runs from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
