Home & Garden show a go

There's no need to hide your shameful secret any longer.

In fact, it is encouraged that you show off the glaringly gaudy, terribly tacky, bent and busted heavy metal wreck of a stove you've got lurking in your kitchen.

All it takes is an e-mailed photo of your ugly electric stove submitted to the the Canadian Home Builders' Association of Northern B.C. by Thursday at 6 p.m., prior to the Northern B.C. Home & Garden Show Friday through Sunday at the Kin Centres and exhibition grounds.

Be sure to e-mail the photo, along with your name and mailing address, phone numbers and age of the ugly stove to [email protected].

During the home show, voters will determine the winner of a brand new Energy Star stainless steel stove. Judges will pick the top 10 ugliest stoves and put their pictures up for all to see in Kin III. The photo with the most votes wins.

That's just one of the fun activities that is scheduled for the annual home and garden show.

During the popular event, there are features like Ask An Expert, where guests can get information about renovating bathrooms and kitchens, or making sure to Get It In Writing when hiring a contractor for a new build or a renovation project, and there's also the opportunity to hear about the latest in technology to cut heating and cooling costs or make sure there's proper ventilation for a safe home environment.

There's a birdhouse auction held at the show where birdhouses are made in advance and put on display during the three-day event. The birdhouses will be silent auctioned off, with the auction closing at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Each birdhouse is donated and all proceeds of the silent auction will go to the Prince George Naturalists Club.

Ron Berezan, the Urban Farmer, will talk about Backyard Permaculture: Creating Abundance Wherever You Are, and help enthusiasts to tackle the Edible Forest Garden for Cold Climate Gardeners.

The second annual RONA Kutthroat Construction Competition will be part of the entertainment during the home and garden show.

"Three builder companies are doing an onsite build over the three days of the Home & Garden Show to create playhouses and these things end up being amazing," said Terri McConnachie, executive officer for the Canadian Home Builders' Association of Northern B.C. "They will be auctioned off and the winner is determined by viewers' choice. There's the sound of hammers pounding nails, there's sawdust all over the ground and that's what people want. It's done Kutthroat style so some of the materials they need are hidden at different vendors throughout the Kin Centres so if they want tools and materials they need to go on a scavenger hunt. Then there's sabotages like going without power for an hour, these kinds of things."

Proceeds from the auctioned off playhouses will be shared between BC Children's Hospital, Parkinson's Society and the YMCA of Northern BC.

The Northern BC Home & Garden show is in all three Kin Centres, the CN Centre Atrium and on the exhibition grounds.

"This is going to be a really awesome show," said McConnachie.

Advance tickets are $5 until Thursday at Rona, Northern Hardware and Central Builders.

The show is open to the public Friday from 3 to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. At the door it's $8 for adults, $6 for seniors, students and persons with disabilities. Children under 12 are free.
